Time limits
The CICA, will generally only consider compensation applications if they receive them within two years of the incident that caused your injury. The CICA have found that it is more difficult to gather information about incidents that happened several years ago. Often medical records have by then been destroyed, or reliable witnesses have disappeared, etc.
The CICA may allow applications outside the normal two year period, for example: at the time of the incident, you were not able to act for yourself; you were under 18 at the time of the incident; your injuries have only just become noticeable (here you would have to make an application as soon as you discover the cause)
The rules about applying for criminal injury compensation within time are quite strict. The CICA will only accept late applications if it is reasonable and in the interests of justice to do so. In effect, if it proves too difficult to gather the information because of the lapse of time, then the CICA are unlikely to allow a late application as there would be no real benefit.

Assaulted by partner
If you have been assaulted by a partner who you share a home with, the CICA will need to check that you and your assailant no longer live together. Clearly, it would be wrong for your assailant to benefit from your compensation. Your assailant would usually have to be prosecuted (unless there was good reason why this should not happen) before an award would be considered. Similarly, the CICA would be unlikely to make an award if you refuse to help the police by not making a statement.
